- Nelson Mandela was the former president of South Africa.

- He was born in 1918 and died in 2013 (at the age of 95).

- He is known as a politician at the helm of the struggle against apartheid (which was a policy of "separate development" affecting populations according to racial and ethnic criteria).

- Sentenced in 1964 (because of illegal political activites), Nelson Mandela will remain incarcerated 27 years.

- Still so popular, he will be elected in 1994 to the presidency of his country only a few years after his release from prison.
